Wildlife
Long Lake and the surrounding area are rich with wildlife, from the loons that nest here to the fish that patrol beneath the surface to our furry friends on shore. Here are some you may find.
Marine Life
Fishing is a favorite pastime on Long Lake. The lake has an abundance of fish, including Northern Pike, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass, Muskie, Bluegill, and Yellow Perch.

We have several rods and reels at the house, available for your use, However, if you plan to fish in the lake, please get yourself a license. The fines are steep enough to be painful and they do patrol the lake. License information can be found here. There are several local places to get a license if you so choose.

There are a number of locations around the lake where turtles and frogs thrive. They love where they live and tend not to do well when brought indoors, so they don't make good pets.
Other Wildlife
Loons: Long Lake is home to several nesting loons. If you listen, especially in the evening, you can hear their distinctive cry. Please note that it is illegal to harass the loons. (It is recommended that motorized watercraft stay 200 feet from them.)

Other birds: In addition to the loons, bird watchers may find ducks, geese, blue jays, cardinals, goldfinches, woodpeckers, terns, flycatchers, warblers, grackles, crows, wild turkeys, hawks, and the occasional eagle.

Enjoy observing the beautiful birds. There is no need to shoo them (except any ducks that decide to take up residence on the dock).

Furry friends: You will likely see squirrels and chipmunks around the yard. Rabbits and deer often pass through, looking for a bite to eat. Please don't feed the animals, but there's no need to chase them off, either. They are all harmless.

Much less common, but not as harmless, are raccoons, skunks, and black bears. They are scavenger animals, and will generally be scared off with some loud noises, but they should not be directly engaged.
